And while I would be inclined to agree with this assessment in many cases (such as instances where the student lacks motivation), there are also many other instances where online tutoring would be at least as effective, if not more effective, than in-person tutoring. For a self-motivated student, Skype tutoring can work wonders, and its convenience is unmatched. In fact, nearly 100% of my students now meet with me exclusively online--including many who live right here in San Diego--and some who live much further away! Here is how it works:1) If you havent already, then go to www.Skype.com and create a free Skype account and username. Find my username and add me as a contact.Is this sounding too complicated for you? No problem. I have international calling capabilities on my mobile phone, and am happy to conduct phone sessions with you anywhere in the world, time zones permitting.2) Make sure that we have the same books and materials (taking into account that there are often different editions of the same book). You cant have an effective tutoring session unless the student and the tutor are looking at the exact same material. This shouldnt be a problem, so long as we coordinate in advance. 3) Create a lesson plan and timeline for tutoring. How often are we planning to meet before the test? What type of homework will be assigned, and how much? What are your score goals?4) Connect with me via Skype the same way that you would over the phone. I will sometimes use the chat bar to type written messages . Whats nice about this is that it provides a written record of each session. We can also exchange phone numbers as a backup solution, in case there are any technical issues with Skype, or internet connectivity problems. I am often asked, "how is a tutor on the other side of a computer screen supposed to draw out math problems for me / my student?" Easy. I don't need any special equipment; I simply write out the solution with pen and paper as usual, then I take a picture with my phone and send the image file to you directly via Skype's chat feature. It's seamless and easy, and requires zero extra work on your end. If you like, then you could even use Skype's new built-in call recording capability to record your computers screen so that you have a full video and audio record of the lesson. This is very helpful if you'd like to go back and re-watch the video to review certain topics / conversations. I also use the Skype app on my phone (which can be used simultaneously with the computer application) to send my students photos of any necessary visuals, such as correctly solved math questions. Thats all! Yes, there is no *exact* substitute for meeting with your tutor in person, but Skype comes pretty darn close. Its the most convenient way to connect with an expert tutor such as myself without having to leave your home. -Brian
